How Do Meals Keep People Apart?
In every culture, ancient or modern, meals are what the anthropologist Mary Douglas called boundary markers. The word companion is from the Latin, calm, meaning with, and pan, meaning bread. In our progressive city, as a general rule, we eat with people that we are friends and family with. But this is true of all societies, but it was especially true of first century Jewish society.
