Hegel and the Formation of Self Consciousness

i think it's important to take a second to explain hegel briefly. The idea is that we gain self consciousness when we come in contact with somebody else, with another being who has consciousness. This is one of the first moments in the phenomenology of spirit that will eventually lead to what he calls absolute knowing and absolute religion. In order for us to be human, it demands there to be another, another person. So by not recognizing somebody, you keep them in a state of kind of spiritual bondage,. They are not going to be able to realize themselves as an individual.
