The new French Directory was formed in 1797. The first issue on the directory's table was negotiating the end of the war with austrians. Conservatives wanted to make a gene peace with the austrians as a first step toward securing foreign support for the restoration. But termidorians, meanwhile, wanted to extract serious concessions from the republic's enemies.
