Introduction
Judaism in the roman empire at the time of the birth of christianity existed in more than one form. Sacrificial worship in jerusalem operated much like civic religion elsewhere, except for the size and magnificence of the jerusalem temple. Such openness to outsiders was unique in the ancient world. It was possible for a nonRoman to become Roman but only by decision of a roman magistrate.
