To strike up a conversation just simply means to start a conversation. I like the cactus cacti and fungus fungi sort of thing because it's, it adds more of a uniqueness to that word. The phrasal verb strike up actually means to start something. But I believe there's not many contexts where we use this as far as like strike up with something else.
