Stephen's Martello Tower
The English have taken everything else from Ireland, and now they are going to get the folklore and sell it. On top of Stephen's Martello tower, which stands near Dunleery, south of Dublin, there is a parapet where the first chapter of Ulysses begins. Mulligan enters like a priest. He puts his shaving bowl down on the parapet, looks out over Dublin Bay and makes believe he is a priest saying Mass. So we have this mockery of the Mass, a black Mass, which runs all through the book.
