Hepatopulmonary Syndrome

Hepatopulmonary syndrome is a condition of patients who have liver disease and it results in intrapulmonary shunting. The pathophysiology for this is not clearly delineated, but it is thought to be due to an excess of nitric oxide. We see a peponary syndrome in up to a third of our patients who are coming towards liver transplantation because of end-stage liver disease.
