The original signal way of doing it was essentially that if you wanted to create a group, you would come up with an unguessable secret just to get 128-bit numbers on what that. So MLS makes it possible to design secure membership protocols that don't depend on a server making same decisions about who's in the group. The one addition here is that when you receive a message, you also know, you know, who the sender thought they were sending it to.
