What Are the Trends in Fertility Rates in the US?
The first fertility transition to modernity is in the middle and later part of the 18th century in Massachusetts. For a society to remain stable, you need about three or four children to survive to age 15. But if you have much higher mortality rates, you actually need to have more babies. That's only true at current mortality rates.
