The strongest El Nino has been around 2016. Among the most intense in the last 40 years or so, there was a very strong El Nino in 82, 83 and another one in 97, 98. "These kind of epic moments like 82, 97, and to some extent, 2016 sort of define our sense of El Nino," says John Defterios.
