The Rise and Fall of Reggaeton
Daddy Yankee coined the term reggaeton for a blend of Jamaican dancehall, Spanish language street tales and American hip hop. His 2004 single Gasolina not only went top 10 or top 20 in more than a dozen countries worldwide, it also cracked the US top 40 despite featuring scarcely a word of English. The core element of the genre was the dembo rhythm, taken from reggae, augmented by a rap-derived snare and kick drum. Pitbull's ode to ample posteriors Uno tied Daddy Yankee's Gasolina by peaking at number 32 on the Hot 100 in 2004 - the year of reggaeton's breakthrough.
