The Head of the Church
Matthew chapter 1 proceeds to recount the birth of Christ. The child is conceived and born prior to any sexual union between Mary and Joseph. In Matthew, it is Joseph who is front and center in this story. He could have put her to an open shame, but he did not want to; mercy seen as part of his righteousness.
