The Wild with Chris Morgan
The Impact of Systemic Racism on Nature and Wildlife in Cities
Redlining was a discriminatory practice the US government used in the 1930s to help mortgage lenders determine areas considered risky for investment. Chris tells me that this has impacted the relationship that people in these communities have when it comes to the wildlife around them. Take air pollution, for example, residents of Seattle's South Park neighborhood will live eight years less on average than the rest of the city. These areas where redlining held back family wealth and urban development have higher rates of cancer, higher rates of asthma,. preterm births, less tree canopy cover, less nature.
