The Importance of Having an Audience

I've gone from writing one book about one subject in one style to something completely different. I found that I was able to achieve a measure of independence or so I've convinced myself by virtue of a pre history not of success but a failure whereby because the previous books had sold so badly there was such a small audience for them it didn't make a toss to anybody whether I did more of the same at a very low level or did something entirely different. So weirdly I was yeah I just had this sort of freedom that was born out of not having an audience so I was able  to do these different things really quite selfishly with only one person in mind namely namely my wife.
