The Island of Pitcairn
Before the Panama Canal, Pitcairn was as far removed from contact with the outside world as an island could be. Even our own crew of natives came to grief in their second passage over it. They had gone out to the schooner for supplies Criton had ordered. A few sacks of flour, some canned goods, and kerosene oil were swept into deep water by the backwash; a Chinese storekeeper stood on shore wringing his hands in dumb grief.
