The i r a bomb attack on the grand hotel in brighton during the governing conservative party annual conference. Five people were killed and more than 30 others injured, including trade minister norman tebbet and his wife margaret. I remember it because i was in the hotel shortly after the blast. Among the debris and the dazed delegates merging like coughing ghosts with their bodies caked in white plaster dust. It may have been a small bomb by i r a standards, but it demonstrated a new level of terrorist stophistication.
