Larry Niven's Legacy of Hero

A lot of fantasy, you're not going to want to do this probably. But rational doesn't necessarily mean scientific. I recommend the book to anybody who wants to look at how a science fiction writer takes a neat piece of real biology from our world and extrapolates it into a fascinating, fascinating story.
