The Role of Vaccines in Preventing RSV Infection
RSV is a very important pathogen in infants, particularly those born prematurely. Unfortunately, infants have a relatively undeveloped immunity and respond poorly to vaccines. In this trial, the investigators administered vaccine or placebo to women between 24 and 36 weeks gestation. They followed the infants for medically attended lower respiratory tract RSV and for severe disease. There were few serious adverse events and there did not appear to be an increased risk of fetal loss in this small group of people.
