Is There Any Manic Names in This?
This notebook was identified by a Nantucket wailing expert named Edward Stackpole. Nickerson was only 14 when he went out on the open sea, but he was 71 when he finally wrote down the story. The stories in Nickerson's notebook and the narrative written by first mate Owen Chase more or less matched up. But Nickerson's account was more warts and all, which gave the story a much more human flavor.
