Marion Carl shot down Japanese 27-kill ace, Junichi Sasai. By the time VMF 223 leaves Guadalcanal in October, Carl would be the United States' second ranking ace with 16 and a half confirmed kills. He's one of the few high score Marine aces who do not receive the Medal of Honor here.
