Is There a Generational Distinction Between the Languages?
Icelanders can largely understand Old Norse, even if it sounds funny to them. Many words that a modern day romance language speaker could recognize from Latin. There are 3,000 year old words in Homer that a modern Greek speaker would recognize. Think how many Italian words seem familiar if you know some French or Spanish? That's true. So I think it's important to distinguish how long it takes for separate languages to emerge from howlong it takes for them to lose any resemblance at all in their words.
