The Importance of General Planning in Language Models
If we look at systems today, it seems to me that they don't have this kind of general planning ability. I think people often fail to appreciate how rapidly language models have improved on this front. They're definitely not consistently making brilliant long term plans. But it's not the case that they simply can't plan or thinking reasonably in a situation that's not exactly the same as something they encountered in training. It tends to go off the rails when they make really long or complicated plans.
