D.D. went by Dan to most of his friends and family, but we're just going to call him D.D. He grew up big and strong as a, quote, husky country boy who was widely liked. In the rare hours of free time, he would collect the bones of animals. On April 3rd, 1865, they walked 18 knot miles to the town of Whitby in the United States. They managed to borrow two dollars from their friends - enough to strike out and start a new life.
