Freyr Gaspar De Carvaggile's Amazon Battle
The most detailed description of this alleged Amazon battle was recorded by Freyr Gaspar de Carvaggile, a Dominican missionary who had sailed the river with Oriana. These female fighters reminded the Spaniards of the legendary warrior women of Greek myth, the Amazons. In his writing, the Freyr immediately associated this unnamed indigenous group with the mythical Amazons, who tangled with ancient Greek heroes. There they met fierce resistance. The men did not dare turn in flea and those that attempted to flee, were killed with clubs.
