Ulysses and the General in the Darkness of the Civil War

The general describes the night as, one of impenetrable darkness with rain pouring down in torrents. The ground readily gives way under the horse's weight, saving him from a broken leg. Two nights later, Ulysses dismounts from his horse to find he can't put weight on his leg. Without the adrenaline that comes from leading men, dodging bullets and literally being showered with brains, the general realizes just how bad that injury has become.
