Quakers were known linguistically for refusing to give in to having you refer both to the plural and the singular. They didn't like the idea of addressing individuals as if they were exalted somehow. The Quakers kept the thou in the V forms to the point of getting hurt sometimes. There were people who actually got hit calling somebody thy or thee.
