White Rot Fungi
All groups of fungi have the ability to break down contaminates, not just white rot fungi. A colleague did a phd. Thesis research on surveying fungle populations at the super fund sites. She found that there was very few white rot fungi growing in these soils which had been contaminated with creosote for decades. They're speculating that because these types of fungi produce structures called hydrophobins, they used to attach to hydrophobic surfaces.
