In an ideal world, we would have older cops for one thing. Right now, this recruiting crisis means that police departments can't be very picky. This is actually not like the military where you're going to be out there with 50 other people and somebody can tell you what to do. Our police officers are out there all by themselves. And yes, they can call for their sergeant or They can call for backup. But there's probably going to be a significant period of time in any situation where it's going to be one or two officers alone having to decide how to handle a situation.
