The Dark Forest Principle

The Dark Forest Principle says that no one wants to reveal themselves because if they reveal themselves, then they endanger themselves. And a civilization does make itself known, and then they're just destroyed to protect the safety of everybody else. The universe is teeming with life but already butting up against some sort of resource limitation which is why everybody's kind of hiding out.
