The book is about the Pharisees and Phariseism, a sect in Jesus' day that many of us will be familiar with. The author says he was deliberately writing it aware that there is a smug satisfaction in evangelicalism. He wanted to show that we can't simply sign up to our church's statement of faith or denominational confessions but not actually live in those words.
