I think the sense of self is blinking in and out of existence all the time for everybody, whether they learn to meditate or not. And it's only someone who learns to meditate who just notices it or can produce that blinking on demand by paying attention to this thing we're calling eye. I think perhaps a better example based on just its ever-present quality in our lives is to visual saccade. So people don't really notice that when they're moving their eyes all around continuously, their vision is being interrupted by every moment of moving because the brain has learned for evolutionary reasons not to take in information during the moving phase of eye travel.
