The Benefits of Nullification
nullification was used successfully when it wasn't a national emergency or tragedy as some people would call it. What I think it generally did was remind the federal government that if it presses too hard, it might wind up in a battle it can't win. The Nullification of 1798 over the Alien and Sedition Acts brought national attention to those issues. And I don't think it's a coincidence that Jefferson was then elected president in 1800.
