Michael Stipe is famous at this point as an enigmatic rock star frontman specifically for his ultra cool abstractness. The Pennsylvania turnpike is unmusical. Just crazy long. There are several ultra cool photos of the band in the liner notes by professional ultra cool band photographer Anton Corbain. Only Michael Stipe is not wearing dark sunglasses all the time. And there's a photo actually of Michael Stipe shirtless and half submerged in the sea with a backwards hat on. It's in black and white but you can just tell it's the golden hour. And yeah, he and Natalie Merchant would have been perfect for each other.
