The Importance of Materials in Hypersonic Flight
Flight testing is a way of validating our computational methods. As we go faster and faster, we have to start changing our materials. The X15 was built from Inca-Nel; they expect that it would be able to handle temperatures from Mach 5 to Mach 6. They wanted to get to Mach 7, so how did they do that? They put in a blative surface that something that could burn away and take away the heat before it got to the alloy.
