CHAPTER

The Nikkei Experience

Over 110,000 Japanese Americans and their descendants faced the grim reality of the American government's internment policy. The Nikkei families were crowded into military sites scattered across eight states. At camps like Hila River in Arizona and Manzanar in California, living quarters were bleak, cramped, dirty, and poorly constructed. Life in the camps was also regimented and difficult. But despite this, the Nikkei did what they could to adapt. They decorated, built their own furniture, started clubs, schools, and held church services. Prisoners went on labor and hunger strikes.
