The History of Iceland

The British occupation of Iceland technically didn't last very long. Less than a month after the occupation began, they asked the Canadians to relieve them and garrison the island. The then-neutral United States agreed to garrison the island, with American troops arriving in August. Naval air station Keflavik became the basis for the modern Keflavk International Airport. In 1944, Iceland officially became a republic.
