1876 marks end of original purpose of Republican Party, which was to win Civil War. So it acquires a different purpose and becomes the party of certain kinds of business interests. In some ways, it remains the war party so that the wars of the end of the 19th century are fought under a Republican president McKinley. First and second world wars were interludes of democratic presidencies dominated by Republicans.
