Cohabitation is the fastest growing type of family. Last year there were around 3.6 million cohabiting couples in the UK. But what happens when a relationship breaks down? The only part of the United Kingdom where former cohabitants have any financial rights is Scotland. Couples have virtually no rights at all in Northern Ireland or England and Wales.
