The Royal Navy in the Second World War

Britain had the largest navy in the world in 19 39, it isn't necessarily mean that much of the royal naval tonnage was up to date. Most british battleships were old and slow and could not be adapted for bulk, modern fire control equipment. The dutch navy's triactially stabilized hasmay system represented the most advanced aa gunnery technology in the world at the time. And secondly, as is so often the case with britain's war, churchill's strategy caused huge complications for the royal navy. It struggled against odds to fulfil too many responsibilities with too few ships, all vulnerable to air attack.
