Total calories are going to matter. I favor a periodized nutrition approach where an athlete is getting roughly between 15, 60% of their calories from carbohydrate and the rest split between fat and protein. The endurance athletes can just match their caloric needs. It doesn't absolve you of the macronutrient distribution side of things, but it takes care of a big, big, big part of it.
