The Importance of Economic Growth in the West
It's simply not true to say that politicians in the West or across the world make GDP or economic growth that overriding priority. For a start, unemployment figures are right up there. Inflation, there's a whole load of other indicators that governments look at. What I'm constantly struck by though is that where you have policies that promote other aspects of human or environmental well-being, but potentially harm GDP, it is incredibly difficult to get them past.
