The Son of Taiwan, by Chen Song-Blan
Chen Song-blan was born into a poor family, but this doesn't quite capture the degree of poverty. Most Taiwanese in 1950s Taiwan were poor, but even by these standards, Chen's family was... I don't want to say dirt poor. They didn't own farmland and were too poor to even rent land. The father worked on this plot of land when he had downtime between the various agricultural jobs he was hired for. He liked to drink, and as a result, sometimes got out of hand, passing out in front of the local temple.
