In Beowulf, the Danes fall back into idol worship and sacrifice to demons because they can't beat grandal. There's a really robust vocabulary used to refer to God in Anglo-Saxon literature. The description of hell is almost the same or identical to the one that's given in one of the Blickling homilies.
