Stoics believe that no event can harm our soul. But some people mistakenly interpret this aspect of stoicism and consider it repugnant or even pathological, to view the loss of a loved one as an example. How do we discipline ourselves not to react to assents that have much higher stakes? It is one thing to withhold assent from a valued judgment that a driver has cut you off, did you any harm? However, withholding assent from valued judgments about a termination letter from work, the discovery that your partner has been unfaithful, bad news from the doctor may seem to be another thing entirely.
