"I hate the way literature is approached in the academy," he says. "It thinks the present is better and wiser than the past." A poem can last a thousand years, but it's still alive for someone 2000 years after its writing was written. The internet has changed how we look at our history; there are no archives of old books or manuscripts to back them up anymore. But that doesn't mean they're any less important as historical documents.
