Joan says that the hate crime murders of James Bird and Matthew Shepard, so James Bird being that black man who was killed and then Matthew Shepard being white but gay and he was killed for being gay. The only way this attention can be brought to this is in like someone's death. Like why did we have to wait till George Floyd was choked out to all of a sudden feel like this is an issue right? And I don't know if I've grown up feeling like I could be killed for beinggay but I knew that I would lose relationships and I knew thatI would lose connection and opportunities. So it's like it kind of makes sense.
