What Is Dark Energy?

Dark energy is just the name for this discovery for which we have no real explanation. It's possible, because gravity gets weaker as distance grows, that we could have lived in a universe with no dark energy. But until we discovere dark energy, we never imagined that it could actually be accelerating outward.
