Last year, the last 12 months have seen highest immigration figures we've ever had. The government made exceptions for asylum seekers from Ukraine and Hong Kong. And there was great public support, particularly over Ukraine. So what does that tell you about the way that sympathy can be extended in certain circumstances, but not others? Well, it tells me that where there is enough television exposure, the public, when they see what's happening, become more sympathetic to the plight of the victims. But as long as our leading politicians don't use nasty language like invaders or cannibalised, people think some of our countries under threat.
