The Confederacy and the Civil War

In December of 1860, just before Lincoln's inauguration, South Carolina became the first state to secede from the union. Buchanan sought to appeal to southern moderates who might prevent the session in other states and again proposed this package of constitutional amendments. Despite all of Buchanan's efforts, six more slave states had seceded by the end of January 1861. He received angry and threatening letters and stories displayed likenesses if you can, and were the eyes inked red, a noose around his neck, and the word traitor on his forehead. The Senate debated resolutions of condemnation and newspapers accused him of colluding with the Confederacy. In May 1868 died of the common cold, having unsuccessfully defended
