Isn't That the Problem With Euripides?
Euripidean characters are actually supposed to be tragic for their own personal action, not as archetypes. So this is a version of greek cheerfulness that nature doesn't like. i notice on wichipaedia that sophocles is only like 17 years older, probably, than euripides. so we're talking about a pretty quick degeneration on neta's scale.
